Some notes from our travel hockey program....LI EDGE
Port Washington Skating Center and the LI EDGE have committed to help out an individual who is overcoming challenges of his own.
On June 21, 2012 while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan,
Gunnery Sargent Ralph DeQuebec ("Gunny")lost both his legs above the knee in an IED explosion.
A former Los Angeles All City linebacker, shot putter and all around athlete,
DeQuebec has continued to pursue his passion to train and compete while
recovering from his wounds at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in
Bethesda, Md. With the unending support from his wife Katie,
also a veteran, Gunny participated in numerous physical activities
as part of his rehabilitation, wheelchair basketball, lacrosse, monosking
just to name a few.
In 2013, GySgt DeQuebec foundhis real passion - sled hockey!
The sport is fast, physical and challenging - it checked all of
Gunny's boxes, he was hooked. Gunny trains on the ice
as often as he can, if ice time is available.
Earlier this year GySgt DeQuebec was selected to the
US National Development Sled Hockey Team, an incredible achievement
considering he's only been playing sled hockey for one year.
Gunny's goal is make the US National Sled Hockey Team and represent the USA
as a Paralympian at the 2018 Paralympic Games in PyeongChang, Korea.
Marine Corps veteran Ralph DeQuebec leads the USA Warriors sled hockey team
onto the ice for a game against the San Antonio Rampage, Sept. 18, 2014.
