What Hockey Means to Me

There are countless reasons why hockey is a phenomenal sport to play, learnfrom, and help establish traits that will stick with you the rest of your life.

Hockey is a fantastic sport to get involved in at an early age, and I was glad that I did get involved at such an early age in my life. Being able to get the winning goal for your team is an unbelievable experienxce. For me the best part is the crowd cheering, and it feels like our team gets a burst of confidence. Or winning a game when your tyeamwas the underdog and you see the other team astounded. It makes you feel like you just accomplished something. Making your coaches, parents, and yourself proud.

Hockey has so many other important lessons that go along with being on a team and being able to play the sport. Getting to know other people that love playing hockey as much as you do is one of the best parts. also, going to hotels with your team for tournaments, and being able to play knee hockey or running around the hotel in circles like maniacs.

Hockey has also helped me grow and make good choices in my life. For example, I have built traits of courage, tolerance, and discipline. Courage has helped me becaouse I learned to be able to take a hit and get back up. This helps me throughout my life constantly. Tolerance has helped me because as good as our officiating systems and players are in today's sporting world, they will never be perfect. There are so many instances throughout a season, or during a single game, that I have learned to accept situations that are out of my control, such as debatable officiating, or the inevitable misplays made by both myself and my teammates. Finally I've been able to build much discipline since I've started to play hockey. Our team has always been about discipline and that's a huge reason whyour team and organization has gone sso far in this sport.

This is how hockey has helped me become the person I am today.

Hooked on Hockey

The first time I ever saw hockey I was hooked. I was about 3 years old and I saw the movie The Mighty Ducks. I thought it was the best sport ever. My first NHL game was in California visiting my cousins and we saw the Mighty Ducks play the Vancouver Canucks.

I wanted to play the sport so badly that the week after we came back from California I started taking lessons. I took lessonns on Thursday afternoon with Coach Ron and Coach Kevin. They pretty much taught me how to skate. The thing Coach Ron said the most was "hockey position".

The next year I started intramurals, then mini-mites, and then travel. Through out the time I have been playing hockey I have had a lot of fun at tournaments and games. It would not have been a fun experience without the special coaches and staff members. Every time you walk in the door of Port Washington Skating Center someone always greets you. Fred is a big part of Port Washington Skating Center, he helps you with anything and always is the nicest to you. All of the coaches are very helpful when it comes to improving your game. Ihave a lot of fun playing for the Edge and going to Port Washington Skating Center.

My Favorite Hockey Memory

When I look back I really like all my hockey memories. A few stand out the most, but the most important one, I think. This all started last season, when we helped habitat for humanity as a team, and helped a family in need.

It began last season, around Christmas time. All the kids on my hockey team were really excited for this time of year. This all changed suddenly when our coach told us that we were going to help a family in need.. We had been given a "wish list" from the organization listing the many needs for the family. The following weekend we shopping at target for everything we needed., We roamed the store for a long time, checking off the list as we carefully selected the special items. These items were as basic as shoes and socks, MP3 player, DVD, blankets and sheets. When we saw how much each one of us did for the family, it made everyone happy. When we finally checked out, and brought the items to our cars, we saw how much we all did, and we were all proud of ourselves. We gift wrapped and tagged the items. We invited the family, which consisted of two young children, a teenager and an older boy. They did not have a father for one reason or another. The littlest boy had some type of surgery on his head, which much have really hurt the family’s entire ready tight budget. They came after one our practices, and we were waiting for them. We all waited in one of the locker rooms, and when they walked in, they thanked us so much. The look on their faces as they opened the gifts could not be explained any other way, as priceless! They were so happy to see all they had received and thanked us repeatedly.

This was one of my favorite memories, even if it did not even involve skating at all. It was a fun way to help a family in need, with my friends on my hockey team. This was one of my favorite hockey memories, and I hope it is now one of yours.

“The Reasons We Play (Hockey)”

Hockey isn’t a game, a sport, or even a passion
Hockey is a part of the player’s life

For all hockey players
It’s a burning desire to get out there
On a sheet of freshly cut ice
And feel your sharp metal blades
Cut deep into the cold ice
It’s like a warm knife going through butter

The feeling you get
When you’re flying down the ice
With a cool, but crisp breeze blowing into your face is indescribable

When you walk in off the blue line and rip a hard but deadly accurate slap-shot on goal
You hear the puck go “clank” off the cross bar
Right down into the back of the net
Then with light on and buzzer sounding, you realize you scored the game-winning goal
The crowd goes wild
The grin you have is from ear to ear
And excitement that goes throughout your body leaves you breathless

Most people think I’m crazy
But the feeling you get and the reaction from the crowd
Either when yo wreck someone or get wrecked
leaves you speachless-and sometimes windless
This is my game
This is hockey

SOMEONE SPECIAL

There is one very special kid that I have the pleasure to know. His name is Charlie . He is not a forward, nor is he a defenseman or a goalie, but he plays a very important role on our team. He has a disability called down syndrome. I couldn't think of a nicer, friendlier person in the whole world.
Last month my hockey team was up in Massachusetts for a hockey tournament. We were cruising through the preliminary round, finishing with a 3-0 record. We were all anxious to see who we were going to play in the semi-final round. It wound up being the team from New Jersey. They happened to be staying in the same hotel as us.
Charlie walked into the lobby high-fiving everyone. A couple of the kids on the New Jersey team were pointing and laughing. We were furious. Or as our Coach would say "cheesed off"
The next morning in the locker room, we knew something had to be done. We DOMINATED this team. The final score was 5-1 and that is far less than the beating we gave this team. Every time we checked someone we would say "charlie" to remind them not to mess with anyone on our team. Our chant was.. 1-2-3 CHARLIE!!
